stay connectedThese are trying times to be sure.  With the directive to stay at home to stop the spread, it’s essential for us humans to stay connected without physical contact.  This is not easy to do since our overall well-being relies on human touch.

Even on those occasions that some have to leave their homes, we’re instructed to stay six feet away from others.  At least we can see other people even though there is no physical contact. These measures are important to flatten the curve.  Those most impacted are the elderly, probably the most vulnerable of our population.

People are getting creative in the ways they stay connected, especially to their elderly loved ones. Visits are no longer allowed in retirement communities.  This can cause those with dementia to believe they’ve been abandoned.

One creative idea I’ve seen in social media, is that children, both young and old, are visiting outside on the other side of windows with their parents and grandparents.  They talk through the window or on the phone to keep their distance for safety.

In these times of isolation, it’s more important than ever to stay connected, especially for those that live alone. Fortunately, we live in the digital age and there are many options to connect with family and friends.

Phone calls and texting are easy ways to check on each other, but sometimes you want to see the person that you’re communicating with. It may not be physical touch, but it provides the feeling of contact.

Another option to stay connected is through video over the internet.  There are various options in the realm of online video communications. I’m not real tech savvy, but I learn a lot by searching for things I don’t understand.

As I was searching for video calls, I found several options. Here is a link to an article that explains how to use Zoom, Skype & Google Hangouts for video conferencing. The only one I’ve used is Skype, and only with one other person, but I see that changing in my near future.

Another way to video chat is through Portal from Facebook.  It seems like a great way to stay connected with loved ones when you can’t be there in person. There are many features on these devices, not just video chatting. The smart camera pans around the room and keeps up with the action so you feel like you’re there in person!
