Linen Closet Storage Best Practices

By |2021-07-05T12:41:36-05:00July 7th, 2021|Categories: Home Organization, Storage|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Not every home has a linen closet.  If your home has one, there are a couple of places where they may be located. Either in the bathroom, or they may be found in the hall outside the bathroom.  Typically, they are not just used to store linens.  Most likely, they are used to store towels, bed linens, personal care items and more. The location may determine what type of items you store in your linen closet. If it’s in the bathroom, consider the humidity that accumulates due to lack of air circulation, even with an exhaust fan, so you don’t [...]

Don’t Buy Storage Products Until After Assessment

By |2021-06-21T17:42:22-05:00June 23rd, 2021|Categories: Home Organization, Storage|Tags: , , , , , , , |

New clients always want to know what storage products to buy before we meet.  My recommendation is not to buy anything until after assessment of their needs.  Needs assessment in terms of acquiring additional storage comes later in the organizing process. During the first step of the organizing process, which is the sorting step where we put like items together, we will empty all sorts of storage products. They come in all forms, such as baskets, plastic or glass containers, boxes of every size and shape, shelves, bookcases, etc. All of these containers can be repurposed for organizing systems. I’ve [...]

How to Plan Meals Without Wasting Food

By |2021-04-20T14:38:00-05:00April 21st, 2021|Categories: Planning, Time Management|Tags: , , , , , , |

Planning and cooking healthy meals that your family loves without wasting food can be a challenge.  Having a hectic schedule makes it even more challenging, even if you’re single. The tendency to order a pizza delivered, or drive through a fast-food restaurant can become commonplace. This tendency allows for sustenance in a pinch but long-term can cause health issues because you’re not eating healthy. The biggest health issue is weight gain which can sneak up on you if you’re not careful.  It’s really ok to order in on occasion, but don’t make it a habit. Planning, and even cooking meals [...]

By |2021-03-17T17:19:00-05:00March 24th, 2021|Categories: Storage|Tags: , , , , |

Do you keep a supply of greeting cards on hand to be ready for occasions that pop up? Do you have a pile or two of greeting cards that you received from others that you just can’t bear to discard? If you answered yes to either of these two questions, this article may be of some help. These issues fall into two categories – supplies and memories. Solutions to both of these categories is all about storage and organization.  How you store them is just as important as how you organize them in in their containers. I often see piles [...]

The Importance of Keeping Your Things Visible

By |2021-03-13T10:57:56-06:00March 17th, 2021|Categories: Home Organization, Storage|Tags: , , , |

Keeping your things visible doesn’t necessarily mean to store everything you own out in plain view, although that’s one way to do it if you have the space. It just means that you are able to see all of your belongings at a glance so you know what you own. How you organize your belongings factors into the visibility concept. If you aren’t keeping your things visible, how do you know where an item lives so you can find it? How do know where to put your things back where they belong? How do you know what items you even [...]

Storage Furniture Works Great in Small Spaces

By |2020-11-17T13:41:09-06:00October 28th, 2020|Categories: Storage|Tags: , , , , |

Storage furniture is not just for small spaces, but it does work well if that is your situation. You may be asking what I mean by that term. Just like containers, there are a lot of pieces of furniture that would fall into the storage category. The obvious pieces of storage furniture are bookcases, cabinets, armoires, dressers, desks, etc. There are also not so obvious pieces such as storage ottoman’s, benches and beds with built-in drawer’s underneath that do double duty. These pieces of furniture double as storage so you get more bang for your buck and save space at [...]

6 Easy to Access Storage Solutions

By |2020-11-17T13:41:14-06:00April 22nd, 2020|Categories: Home Organization, Storage|Tags: , , , , |

Containment is part of the organizing process. Containers make good storage solutions, but is it always easy to access the contents? This is a question that needs to be considered based on the type of storage solution.  The criteria for storage may be different for each organizing solution, but ease of access should be a top priority. As mentioned in previous posts, containment, or containers come in all shapes and sizes. Every box, bin, basket, shelf, drawer, rack, cabinet, pantry, closet and room in your house is a container, as well as your house itself. How we organize these containers [...]

Consolidate to Save Space

By |2020-11-17T13:41:19-06:00August 30th, 2019|Categories: Home Organization, Organizing Tips|Tags: , , , , |

When you consolidate contents of containers with the same product, you save space.  Many of my clients have multiples of one product with varying amounts in each container. These could be personal care items, cleaning products, office supplies, etc. We consolidate the varying amounts into one container and voila, more space! I often wonder how that happens. My thought is to use up all the stuff in one container before opening a new one. If it’s the same product, why open a new one? It could be that the container being used, gets pushed behind others so it’s not seen.  [...]

Organizing a Lifetime of Memories

By |2020-11-17T13:41:23-06:00February 27th, 2019|Categories: Home Organization, Storage|Tags: , , |

Let’s face it, we all keep objects that have memories attached to them. The memory typically has an emotional attachment to the item.  That may be why we keep them.  Some feel that they will forget the memory if they discard the object.  That may or may not be true but there are ways to manage your memorabilia to keep your memories from fading away. Everyone has different ideas of what they keep in terms of memorabilia.  I’m not talking about photos, that is a category all on its own, although it does fit the memories theme. What I’m talking [...]

Plastic Grocery Bags Are Not Good For Long-Term Storage

By |2020-11-17T13:41:23-06:00February 20th, 2019|Categories: Storage|Tags: , , , |

Currently, the big question on my mind is, why do so many people use plastic grocery bags for storage? I see this in my client’s homes as well as family member’s homes, even my own.  Not by me of course, but others. I’m calling them grocery bags but the reality is that all stores where you purchase products use them. Maybe grocery stores were the first ones to start using them, who knows, I certainly can’t remember that far back. I see them in refrigerators, freezers, drawers, closets, garages; everywhere humans store things. Instead of storing packages of meat in [...]
