Commit to a Weekly Discard Session

By |2022-09-13T14:43:39-05:00September 14th, 2022|Categories: Decluttering|Tags: , , , , , , |

In order to keep clutter from piling up, try this strategy – commit to a weekly discard session. The thought is to keep your belongings proportionate to your living spaces. Discarding can mean trash, recycle, or donate, which is a type of recycling. A weekly discard session doesn’t have to be a major undertaking. This strategy can be tailored to the amount of time you have available, being mindful that the amount of effort you put into this strategy determines the results. The idea is to choose a room, area or category each week and focus your available time on [...]

Preparing to Sell Your House

By |2022-03-14T10:34:38-05:00March 16th, 2022|Categories: Moving|Tags: , , , , , |

This is a very good time to sell your house for a lot of reasons. The main reason is that there is low inventory for available properties and sellers are at an advantage. This situation is commonly referred to as a ‘sellers market’.  There are currently more buyers than available homes for sale, which creates competition among buyers to get the seller to accept their offer. If you have ever sold a house, then you know that there are many preparations to complete in order to put your house on the market. Several years ago, I wrote a post called [...]

How to Downsize Your Belongings Every Day

By |2021-08-02T16:25:11-05:00August 10th, 2021|Categories: Downsizing|Tags: , , , , , |

We all have an over-abundance of things.  As I’ve mentioned in the past, at some point in your life you will have a need to downsize your belongings.  Waiting until it becomes a necessity is not a good approach. Don’t wait until that time comes because it’s inevitable that you will need to downsize your belongings at some point. Be proactive, start before it becomes a necessity because if you wait, you may not have the physical or mental capacity to get the job done. You want to be able to make decisions for your things, you don’t want others [...]

Discarding Regrets – How to Avoid Them

By |2020-11-17T13:41:14-06:00May 6th, 2020|Categories: Downsizing|Tags: , , , , |

As a professional organizer specializing in downsizing, I have yet to come across a client that had discarding regrets. A lot of their spaces are consumed by things that can’t be donated or sold.  Things like broken items, clothing with stains, or rips, or boxes they held onto instead of recycling them. These items are the no-brainers. They engage my services because they need to reduce the amount of their belongings for various reasons. The most common reason is that they are moving to a smaller home. They understand that they can’t take everything with them because it won’t all [...]

Purging Holiday Decorations

By |2020-11-17T13:41:28-06:00December 13th, 2017|Categories: Decluttering, Donation, Holidays|Tags: , , , |

The holidays are upon us and there is much to do.  From creating menus to shopping for gifts to putting up holiday decorations.  The earlier we start on our to-do list the better.  Decorating is one of those things that can be done early.  We may not think about purging as we decorate but it’s a great way to reduce the amount of decorations as well as creating more storage space. Not everyone decorates for the holidays but many of us enjoy showing our holiday spirit in this way.  We accumulate many decorations over the years.  We acquire holiday decorations [...]

Should I Sell or Donate Unwanted Items?

By |2023-04-20T11:31:56-05:00October 4th, 2017|Categories: Decluttering, Donation, Recycle|Tags: , , , |

During the purge part of the organizing process, I’m often asked if an unwanted item should be donated or sold. This is a great question! The short answer is that it’s an individual preference.  In my experience, most people know what mechanism they want to use to discard unwanted items. There are some items that have been in families for generations, and the current owners think they may be of value, but they’re not sure.  For those items, I recommend getting an appraisal to determine value.  Then decide whether to contact other family members to see if they want the [...]

Where to Donate Your Treasures

By |2020-11-17T13:41:29-06:00June 7th, 2017|Categories: Decluttering, Downsizing, Recycle|Tags: , , , , |

I’m often asked, ‘where do I donate _______?’ (fill in the blank).  When I’m asked this question is typically during, or after a purge session.  Whether it’s spring cleaning, or time to downsize, you may come across items that are not trash-worthy.  These items still have mileage in them and you don’t want them to end up in a landfill.  The obvious solution is to recycle them. Recycling has a variety of meanings; send to a recycling facility, repurpose/reuse, sell or donate.  This post focuses on where to donate specialty items. There are many charities that accept donations.  The [...]

‘Tis the Season’……of Giving

By |2020-11-17T13:41:40-06:00December 2nd, 2013|Categories: Donation, Downsizing, Holidays|Tags: , , |

The holiday season is in full swing and so is the season of giving.  That’s what the holidays are all about… giving.  To give of one’s abundance, is the definition of giving, as shown in www.Dictionary.com. We give thanks during the Thanksgiving holiday for the abundance of blessings bestowed on us throughout the year.  Charity food drives are prominent at this time, as a means to give of one’s abundance. Donation drives to give away your excess things are also in full swing.  This is a good time to purge not only your things, but to have your kids go through [...]
