Using Labels is Organizing’s Method of Communication

By |2021-03-04T14:44:20-06:00March 4th, 2021|Categories: Home Organization|Tags: , , , , |

In the past I’ve talked about the importance of using labels in just about every post I’ve written about getting and staying organized.  As the title says, they are a method of communication in terms of organization. Using labels leaves no doubt where items live in your spaces, so you can put things back where they belong after use and avoid misplacing items.  This concept works for everyone regardless of age.  Be mindful of the age of the person to determine the type of label to use for a particular item. For older adults, they may need a label with [...]

Using Tags During Downsizing

By |2021-01-16T17:43:43-06:00January 20th, 2021|Categories: Downsizing|Tags: , , , |

Using tags to mark items during downsizing is so important. When you’re downsizing to move to a smaller home, it can get confusing if items are not tagged correctly. Something may be moved that should not be, or vice versa. The first part of the organizing process is sorting, or putting like items together using tags for various categories. This first step allows you to see all the items in one category, so you know what you want to keep. You may have multiples of one item so you know the rest can go, or you may not need the [...]

Determining Categories Can be Challenging

By |2020-12-09T10:52:11-06:00December 9th, 2020|Categories: Home Organization, Storage|Tags: , , , |

The first step in the organizing process is to sort items into broad categories that make sense to you. A category contains like items. This can be challenging for some, for various reasons.  Everyone is different, so the key to get started on this first step depends on your individual way of thinking. You may be overwhelmed by the amount of your clutter, and that doesn’t help. If you have ADHD, you may overthink this task by being too specific, then become overwhelmed and just stop.  The state of overwhelm can sometimes cause paralysis in making decisions. If that happens, [...]

Multiples of One Item Doesn’t Always Cause Clutter

By |2020-11-17T13:41:14-06:00May 20th, 2020|Categories: Productivity|Tags: , , , , |

Professional organizers, me included, often write about having multiples of one item causing clutter. That can be true if you’re not using all of them due to lack of need, and organization. Each item you own needs to be assigned a home, but sometimes homes can be in various places, confused? Let me explain. There are some instances where multiples of one item are needed because you use them in more than one location.  This concept can be a time saver. Multiples of one item such as reading glasses, may be used in different rooms in your home at different [...]

What Approach Should I Use to Begin to Declutter my Home?

By |2020-11-17T13:41:22-06:00April 10th, 2019|Categories: Decluttering, Organizing Tips|Tags: , , , , |

This is a common question I hear from new clients. The answer is not simple.  There is no one size fits all answer to this question.  In fact, there are very few scenarios in life where one size fits all. The approach you use to declutter your home will likely be different from anyone else. Your situation is different from others so your approach will have a different strategy. Not everyone needs a whole house declutter.  Some just have areas that are clutter magnets and need some tweaking to existing solutions.  Others may need to declutter their home from top [...]

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have a cable organization dilemma!  First let me say that you are not alone.  So many of my client’s homes have this same [...]
