How to Efficiently Organize Tools

By |2022-02-14T10:33:09-06:00February 16th, 2022|Categories: Home Organization|Tags: , , , , , |

It’s been my experience that the best organized solutions work in tandem with your natural routines. Having said that, when you organize tools used in routines, the whole process just flows. I wrote a blog post many years ago called, Behavior Based Organizing. The gist of the article states that ‘the key is the efficiency of the steps in the routine, in terms of behavior’. Part of behavior-based organizing is the way we organize tools for each routine. In the article mentioned above, it states that you need to be able to access the required tools quickly.  The time it [...]

Focus on Safety First When Decluttering

By |2021-09-07T16:00:53-05:00September 8th, 2021|Categories: Decluttering|Tags: , , , , |

Decluttering is the first part of the organizing process. You may think that only applies for older adults, but no, safety first applies to all decluttering projects for all ages.  Not only is clutter a safety issue, but as mentioned in many past posts, it causes stress. During the needs assessment consultation, the client is asked about every area to be organized. We discuss what works and doesn’t work, and potential organizing solutions for the areas that are not working so well. As we walk through their spaces, I’m focused on safety first as I think about solutions. As you [...]

4 Reasons Why Attic Storage is Not a Good Idea

By |2020-11-17T13:41:11-06:00August 19th, 2020|Categories: Downsizing, Storage|Tags: , , , , |

There are many companies that provide attic storage solutions.  Most of what I’ve seen in these solutions look like good ideas in terms of storage and organization. Installing these solutions, and then accessing the items, may make you rethink the solution. As with anything in life, there are pros and cons with attic storage.  In my experience, there are not many pros that I could find if I decided to actually make a list. Most of my clients that use attic storage, put items up there and then forgot about them.  Many years later, when they’re in their golden years [...]

Determining Root Cause

By |2020-11-17T13:41:13-06:00May 28th, 2020|Categories: Problem Solving|Tags: , , |

In my previous life, I worked in IT on a technical support help desk.  People would call in for help with technical issues with their computer equipment.  Part of problem solving on the help desk is to try to determine the root cause of the issue. You probably have had situations in the past where you had to call a service providers support center to resolve an issue for you.  Maybe your phone or internet service was not working, so you called for assistance.  The technician will ask questions to try to determine the root cause of the issue. This [...]

One Size Fits All

By |2020-11-17T13:41:16-06:00February 28th, 2020|Categories: Home Organization|Tags: , , |

There is really no such thing as one size fits all in any aspect of life.  You probably see this term most often with articles of clothing.  Ok, maybe in that way it could be true, although I’m skeptical.  Since everyone is unique, how could this work? According to Wikipedia – “One size fits all” is a description for a product that would fit in all instances. The term has been extended to mean one style or procedure would fit in all related applications. It’s true that the meaning of this term is typically related to products, according to Wikipedia, [...]

Backs of Doors Storage Options

By |2020-11-17T13:41:22-06:00April 17th, 2019|Categories: Home Organization, Organizing Tips, Storage|Tags: , , , , |

The backs of doors are an under-utilized storage option.  For those that have small spaces they can provide the additional needed storage.  There are many options for this type of storage but you need to do a little research to understand what works best for your situation. You must be conscience of the size of the items stored in these locations.  They need to be in proportion to the area around the door when it closes.  Cabinets and pantries have shelves in them that you need to work around depending on the depth of the storage item. If you decide [...]

Making Decisions

By |2020-12-18T13:15:48-06:00August 9th, 2018|Categories: Mindfullness, Problem Solving|Tags: , , , , , |

Sometimes making decisions is easy, other times not so much.  We all make decisions all the time, every day throughout the day.  We don’t think twice about many of them since they are part of our daily routines. We usually make these types of decisions quickly because they are not complex and may be repetitious.  The brains working memory only holds about 7 items.  More than that is processed into long-term memory which requires conscious effort. There are always choices or options to consider in order to make decisions. A decision ‘is the act or process of deciding’ according to [...]

Simple Solutions Are The Best Solutions

By |2020-11-17T13:41:35-06:00May 10th, 2015|Categories: Home Organization, Organizing Tips|Tags: , , , , |

Image courtesy of ponsulak / FreeDigitalPhotos.net Whether you’re organized or not, solutions you use every day are simple and that’s why you continue to use them.  A good example of a simple solution is an everyday routine.  Everyone has them for a lot of aspects of their lives.  We have morning routines, meal time routines, study routines, lawn mowing routines, etc. Think about the way you perform your routines and why you do what you do.  You are likely not going to continue to perform a step in the sequence if it’s difficult to do.  If you did, the consequence [...]
