Think Responsibly Before You Donate Things

By |2024-01-12T13:21:08-06:00January 12th, 2024|Categories: Donation|Tags: , , , , |

We all have a basic understanding of what items that we can donate to charities; donate things that can be resold.  If an item is damaged, stained or has pet hair on it, it cannot be resold or reused, therefore it shouldn’t be donated. When you donate things that can’t be resold or reused, you create more work for the charity. Those items need to be disposed of at the effort and expense of the charity which has limited resources for disposal. When you donate things such as books, they need to be considered more carefully. The main principle of [...]

The coronavirus pandemic created the need to pivot in so many ways, and boxes played a big part. People had to become resourceful as their lifestyles, and routines took a big hit, especially during the shutdown. Going online took on a whole new meaning. Those that didn’t use a computer before, started going online with their electronic devices more and more. Shipping items to our homes became essential, especially at the beginning of the pandemic during the shutdown. We became inundated with boxes of all shapes and sizes from online purchases. And, since we were stuck in our homes, some [...]

Purging Holiday Decorations

By |2020-11-17T13:41:28-06:00December 13th, 2017|Categories: Decluttering, Donation, Holidays|Tags: , , , |

The holidays are upon us and there is much to do.  From creating menus to shopping for gifts to putting up holiday decorations.  The earlier we start on our to-do list the better.  Decorating is one of those things that can be done early.  We may not think about purging as we decorate but it’s a great way to reduce the amount of decorations as well as creating more storage space. Not everyone decorates for the holidays but many of us enjoy showing our holiday spirit in this way.  We accumulate many decorations over the years.  We acquire holiday decorations [...]

Should I Sell or Donate Unwanted Items?

By |2023-04-20T11:31:56-05:00October 4th, 2017|Categories: Decluttering, Donation, Recycle|Tags: , , , |

During the purge part of the organizing process, I’m often asked if an unwanted item should be donated or sold. This is a great question! The short answer is that it’s an individual preference.  In my experience, most people know what mechanism they want to use to discard unwanted items. There are some items that have been in families for generations, and the current owners think they may be of value, but they’re not sure.  For those items, I recommend getting an appraisal to determine value.  Then decide whether to contact other family members to see if they want the [...]

‘Tis the Season’……of Giving

By |2020-11-17T13:41:40-06:00December 2nd, 2013|Categories: Donation, Downsizing, Holidays|Tags: , , |

The holiday season is in full swing and so is the season of giving.  That’s what the holidays are all about… giving.  To give of one’s abundance, is the definition of giving, as shown in www.Dictionary.com. We give thanks during the Thanksgiving holiday for the abundance of blessings bestowed on us throughout the year.  Charity food drives are prominent at this time, as a means to give of one’s abundance. Donation drives to give away your excess things are also in full swing.  This is a good time to purge not only your things, but to have your kids go through [...]

Where do Your Unwanted ‘Things’ go to Die?

By |2020-11-17T13:41:40-06:00October 21st, 2013|Categories: Donation, Home Organization, Recycle|Tags: , , |

All of us have ‘things’. Stuff we accumulate over the years. We have things in our homes, in other people’s homes, in storage units at, or away from our homes. We have things that help us with activities of daily living, things of beauty to decorate us, or other things, sentimental things that trigger happy memories, etc. All of these things have lives, an amount of time to us when they are no longer useful or provide beauty. At the end of their lives, which is determined by us, our ‘things’ die. There could be many reasons for the death of [...]

4 Common Reasons Why we Keep Things & How to Get Past Them

By |2020-11-17T13:41:41-06:00July 14th, 2013|Categories: Donation, Organizing Tips|

There are a lot of reasons why we keep things. Some of them make sense, others, not so much. However, the reason why someone is keeping something may make perfect sense to them. I hear these reasons a lot when I’m working with clients. Some of us have no issues with discarding things. They realize the value of having open and clear spaces and they don’t feel tied to their stuff. Others may realize that they need to do some purging, yet they hold onto things all the same. What they don’t realize is that they will feel so much lighter [...]
