something to look forward toHaving something to look forward to can benefit us in multiple ways. Days, weeks, months, and even years can drag on with activities of daily life when there’s nothing planned that we enjoy, that would make us happy, or accomplishments that we celebrate.

Think about it in terms of our life’s journey. There will of course be ups and downs, but focusing on the positive things and events can help us get through the not-so-positive things that happen along the way. Positive life events such as graduating from high school or college, getting married, having a baby, retirement, coffee with a friend, acquiring the new book from a favorite author, or even going on vacation, fall into the category of something to look forward to.

How does it make you feel when you have something to look forward to? For me, life becomes happier, and I become motivated to prepare for this upcoming event. Focusing on getting ready for this special event can also take your mind off of your troubles, even if just for a little while and maybe your troubles can become less troublesome than you originally thought.

Having something to look forward to can provide an optimistic outlook for the future. It can uplift your mood which contributes to your overall wellbeing. Having an optimistic mindset relieves stress and could actually inspire and energize you to accomplish tasks or projects that you would otherwise put off.

Something to look forward to doesn’t have to be monumental, it just needs to be something important to you.  It could be a little thing like having lunch with a special person in your life that you don’t get to see often.  We all need a reason to get out of bed every day other than working to make a living, something to keep us going.

I’m sure if you think about it, you could come up with at least a few things that fall into the category of something to look forward to. Try it to see if it contributes to your overall wellbeing, and I’m sure you will find that it does.
